FAQs – The Acres

Traffic FAQ

How do I enter The Acres?

Access is via Monsaraz Boulevard and Lisbon Street. There is no direct vehicle access from Halswell Road at this stage.

Why can’t we enter straight off Halswell Road?

The current access points were approved as part of the planning and consent process. Direct access from Halswell Road is not part of this stage of development.

That corner already feels busy. Is it safe?

The road layout has been designed and reviewed by the relevant transport authorities and must meet national safety standards. A traffic safety audit was undertaken before construction, and another one will take place once works are complete. Safety for motorists and people coming into The Acres is paramount and has guided all of the road planning.

What about the bus lane?

The bus lane and surrounding road design were developed by the transport authority. They follow standard road engineering practices used across Christchurch and New Zealand.

Will traffic increase significantly?

We understand people are concerned about increased traffic once The Acres opens. Traffic modelling was carried out during the approval process to assess future volumes, and the surrounding signalised arterial roads are designed to support growth in this part of Halswell.

Have formal safety checks been done?

Yes. Traffic safety audits are required before construction and will take place again once works are complete. Any necessary adjustments are made before roads are open.

Will access change in the future?

Future stages in the wider area may include additional access arrangements, but for now entry to The Acres remains via Monsaraz Boulevard and Lisbon Street.

General FAQs

What is The Acres?

The Acres will eventually span 11 hectares of retail, food and beverage, and commercial space in an open air, village style setting. The vision has always been to create something that feels connected to Halswell’s landscape, history and community.

Where is it located?

On the corner of Halswell Road and Monsaraz Boulevard in Halswell.

How is leasing progressing?

Leasing has been moving steadily. We are currently more than half way with our leasing.  We have taken a thoughtful approach to tenant selection because getting the right mix matters for the long term.

Why are you being selective with tenants?

We have carefully considered both who joins The Acres and where they sit within the development. It is about creating a balanced, easy to enjoy experience for the community.

Is it going to be all food outlets?

No. The mix includes retail, services and hospitality. Balance has always been important to us.

Why does it look different from other shopping centres?

The design reflects Halswell’s character. The rooflines draw inspiration from the Port Hills, stone elements acknowledge local quarry history, and native planting connects the development to its surroundings. The goal was to create something that feels like it belongs here.

Why is there so much native planting?

Native planting softens the space, supports biodiversity and brings seasonal colour and texture. It helps the development feel connected to the natural environment.

Why is it called The Acres?

The name reflects Halswell’s agricultural heritage and the wider Canterbury Plains. This land has long been a place to meet, work and gather, and that sense of history influenced the name.

Is it just a shopping centre?

No. The vision has always been a community hub. There will be open spaces, landscaping and seating areas where people can pause, grab a coffee and connect.

Is it family friendly?

Yes. The layout has been designed with pedestrian movement, accessibility and a welcoming neighbourhood feel in mind.
